It can also be helpful to just make beats as an exercise, as opposed to trying to finish every song. Make 20-30 beats, maybe just bass, melody and a drum kit, and have at least two distinct parts to each one so you can practice smooth transitions. By the end of this, you'll probably find that it's coming more naturally to you.
